Lifting Our Hands in Yadah: A November Reflection on True Thanksgiving

As autumn leaves fall and November approaches, our minds naturally turn toward Thanksgiving. We gather around tables filled with warm meals, taking time to reflect on our blessings.

For followers of Christ, Thanksgiving is far more than a seasonal holiday—it is a core practice of our faith.

The Meaning of Yadah

In the Old Testament, the primary Hebrew word used for thanksgiving or praise is Yadah (יָדָה).

The root of Yadah connects directly to the Hebrew word for hand (Yad). Literally, Yadah means to extend or throw out the hands—to lift one’s hands in worship, gratitude, and surrender to God. It isn't just a quiet feeling; it is an active expression of praise that acknowledges who God is and what He has done.

What Flows from a Heart of Yadah?

  • A Shift in Perspective: Gratitude shifts our focus away from what is missing or challenging and anchors us in God's enduring goodness (Psalm 107:1).
  • Generosity and Grace: A heart overflowing with God’s gifts naturally shares them through kindness, hospitality, and open hands ready to serve.
  • Peace That Guards the Mind: Praying with thanksgiving brings the peace of God to guard our hearts against anxiety (Philippians 4:6–7).
  • Joyful Worship: When we practice Yadah, worship ceases to be a routine duty and becomes a joyful response to God's grace.

"Give thanks (Yadah) to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever."

— Psalm 107:1

This November, let’s go beyond passing the turkey and sharing a token word of thanks. Let’s cultivate a lifestyle of Yadah—raising our hands in worship, opening our hearts in trust, and pouring out God's love to everyone we meet.

CANCELED: A 4-WEEK SERIES ON LOVING OTHERS

SERIES OVERVIEW:
You hear a lot about “cancel culture” these days. It's what happens when swarms of people on the internet band together to call out, shame, or even "cancel" someone. And while there are definitely times when people or systems need to be called out and held accountable, we can all be a little too quick to be cruel to each other — online and offline too. In this 4-week series, we'll get introduced to a few people from Scripture whose stories show us that humans have always struggled to choose love instead of hate. This problem isn't a new one, but through the stories of Jesus, a few outcasts, a king, and a shepherd, we'll see that God is challenging us to love people who aren't like us, love people who are in need, love the people we envy, and love the people we want to hate.
