Jacob Part 1: Introduction

Sep 23, 2025    Michael Ryan Stotler

When most people think of Genesis, they think of Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham and Sarah, or Joseph. But tucked right in the middle is Jacob—Yaaqov in Hebrew—whose story actually takes up half of the Genesis scroll and shapes the identity of God’s people for the rest of Scripture.

In this introduction to Jacob’s story, we’ll explore:

The meaning of his Hebrew name, Yaaqov (Heel-grabber, Trickster).

Why Jacob’s life covers more chapters than Abraham or Joseph.

How the prophets and New Testament writers saw Jacob’s story as a preview of Israel’s future.

The transformation of Jacob’s name to Israel—“the one who wrestles with God”—and why that matters for the entire biblical story.

Jacob’s journey of deception, exile, wrestling, and redemption is not just history—it’s a living picture of God’s plan with His people.

📖 Key Texts: Genesis 25:26; Genesis 49:33; Hosea 12; Isaiah 29; Jeremiah 31; Ezekiel 28; Malachi 1; John 4; Romans 9.

If you want to understand the story of Israel—and ultimately the story of Jesus—you need to understand the story of Yaaqov.
